SEO earns a ranked link in search results. GEO earns a mention or citation inside an AI generated answer. AEO targets the single direct answer, such as a featured snippet, a voice reply or a quoted sentence. Google's own guide to its AI features calls this work "still SEO", and Google's AI features and ChatGPT search cite only pages they can crawl.
What changes is the scoreboard. This GEO vs SEO comparison draws on 4 kinds of evidence. They are the 2023 paper that coined GEO, Google and Bing documentation, OpenAI's publisher FAQ and 3 studies of AI answers by SparkToro and Ahrefs. We checked every figure on its source page on October 31 or November 1, 2026, and we label our own calculations and sample numbers.
- SEO wins a ranked link, AEO wins the single answer, and GEO wins a mention or citation inside an AI written answer.
- Google's documentation states AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization beyond being indexed and snippet eligible.
- Ahrefs found 38% of AI Overview citations came from top 10 pages in early 2026, down from 76% in July 2025.
- The GEO paper raised visibility 30 to 40% by citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics; the 5th ranked source gained up to 115.1%.
- Keyword stuffing performed 10% worse than no edit on Perplexity, and Google says llms.txt neither helps nor harms.
- Measure GEO as a mention rate across repeated prompts plus Bing AI Performance citations and ChatGPT referrals.
What do SEO, AEO and GEO each mean?
SEO targets ranked results, AEO targets direct answers, and GEO targets answers written by AI models, a term from a November 2023 research paper.
- SEO (search engine optimization): improving pages so they rank in the organic results of Google and Bing.
- AEO (answer engine optimization): structuring content so a system returns it as the direct answer. Examples are a featured snippet, a voice reply or a sentence quoted in an AI answer.
- GEO (generative engine optimization): the term from the paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal (IIT Delhi) with researchers from Princeton University. It was accepted to the KDD 2024 conference and focuses on visibility inside answers that a large language model writes.
Ahrefs US data we pulled on November 1, 2026 shows how searchers phrase the comparison:
| Search term | US monthly searches | Keyword difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| generative engine optimization | 7,800 | 58 |
| aeo vs seo | 2,700 | 12 |
| geo vs seo | 2,600 | 24 |
| seo vs geo | 1,900 | 33 |
| aeo vs geo | 1,900 | 9 |
| llmo | 800 | 22 |
| seo vs aeo vs geo | 700 | 12 |
LLMO (large language model optimization) and "AI SEO" are 2 more names for the GEO side. Our answer engine optimization guide covers AEO tactics in depth, so this page stays on the comparison.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO: how do they compare side by side?
The three share one foundation, an indexable and trusted website, and differ in the surface, the unit of success and the measurement. This table is our own summary, based on the sources on this page and our delivery work.
| Factor | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target surface | Organic results on Google and Bing | Featured snippets, voice replies, quoted answers | AI answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Win condition | A ranking position and a click | Being the single answer returned | Being named or linked inside a written answer |
| Typical query | A short keyword, such as "crm software" | A direct question | A long prompt with context, such as "best crm for a 5 person sales team" |
| Retrieval | One ranked list per query | One best passage | Multiple searches per prompt (Google calls this query fan out) |
| Strongest off site signal | Backlinks | Backlinks plus clear entities | Brand mentions across sites the engine trusts |
| Stability | Rankings shift over days and weeks | Snippets switch between pages | Brand lists change between repeated runs of one prompt |
| Main tools | Google Search Console, Ahrefs | Search Console, SERP feature tracking | Bing AI Performance, prompt tracking tools, referral data |
AEO sits between the other two: answer first paragraphs and question headings serve a snippet and an AI answer alike.
What stays the same when you add GEO to SEO?
Crawl access, indexing and helpful content carry over unchanged, because Google's AI features and ChatGPT search both draw on crawled, indexed pages. 3 documents confirm it:
- Google: the AI features documentation states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode". A page qualifies once it is indexed and eligible for a snippet, and no special schema is required.
- Google again: its generative AI guide answers the question of whether SEO still matters with "In short, yes!"
- OpenAI: its publisher FAQ states that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. The condition is that robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot, its search crawler.
In our process, 4 SEO jobs carry straight over: fixing crawl errors, answering the query fully, keeping brand facts identical everywhere and earning relevant links.
What actually changes with generative engine optimization?
5 things change: rankings predict citations less often, answers vary, mentions correlate more than links, fewer searches send a click, and AI traffic hides in normal reports.
| Change | Evidence | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 rankings matter less for citations | Ahrefs found 38% of AI Overview citations came from top 10 pages in early 2026, down from 76% in July 2025 (4M cited URLs) | Pages outside the top 10 can be cited, and top 10 pages can be skipped |
| Answers are unstable | 600 SparkToro volunteers ran 12 prompts a combined 2,961 times and found a less than 1 in 100 chance of the same brand list in any two answers | Measure visibility as a percentage across repeated runs, never one screenshot |
| Mentions correlate more than links | Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs measured a 0.664 correlation between branded web mentions and ChatGPT visibility, versus 0.266 for Domain Rating | Unlinked mentions are measured too, so being named matters as well as being linked |
| Fewer searches send a click | SparkToro's June 2026 study of a Similarweb US panel found 68.01% of Google searches from January to April 2026 ended without a click, up from 60.45% in 2024 | Visibility inside the answer carries more of the value |
| AI clicks blend into organic data | Google counts AI feature traffic inside the Web search type in Search Console | Clicks and impressions from AI answers blend into normal organic reports |
The brand study is correlational, as Ahrefs itself warns. It does not prove that 10 more mentions produce a citation.
What did the original GEO study find, and what did it not?
The GEO paper measured that 3 edits, citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics, lifted visibility in AI answers by 30 to 40% on its main metric. The test used GEO bench, a set of 10,000 queries, with GPT 3.5 Turbo as the answer engine. The same paper also tested Perplexity, with gains of up to 37%.
The paper tested 9 methods. Its rank breakdown is the finding the top ranking GEO vs SEO pages skip:
| Method | Change for the source ranked 1st | Change for the source ranked 5th |
|---|---|---|
| Cite Sources | minus 30.3% | plus 115.1% |
| Quotation Addition | minus 22.9% | plus 99.7% |
| Statistics Addition | minus 20.6% | plus 97.9% |
Lower ranked sources gained the most, and the top source lost share under all 3 methods. Keyword Stuffing, the classic old SEO trick, performed 10% worse than doing nothing on Perplexity.
3 limits apply. The engines were 2023 models, not today's ChatGPT or Gemini. Visibility was scored by word share and a GPT 3.5 judgment, not by real traffic. The rewrites were controlled lab edits, so results on a live site with competitors and a changing index differ. Treat the paper as strong evidence for adding evidence to pages, not as a ranking formula.
How does one paragraph change when you write for GEO?
A GEO rewrite keeps the SEO keyword and replaces claims with checkable statistics from a named source, the approach behind the paper's Statistics Addition method. Here is our own guest post pricing paragraph, before and after.
| Version | Paragraph | What it gives an AI engine |
|---|---|---|
| SEO only | "We offer the best affordable guest posts. Guest posts have huge benefits for SEO and come at great prices." | A keyword, 2 superlatives and no fact worth quoting |
| SEO plus GEO | "A guest post on a DR 40+ site costs $184 at Link Building Services Agency (checked November 1, 2026). Prices run from $62 for DR 10+ to $388 for DR 60+. Every placement ships with its DR and Ahrefs traffic guaranteed." | An answer, 3 checkable prices, a named brand and a date |
The second version still targets "guest post prices" for classic SEO. It also hands an answer engine a sentence it can lift whole and attribute to a named seller.
Which GEO tactics are myths?
4 popular GEO tactics have no support: llms.txt files, chopping pages into tiny chunks, special AI schema and keyword stuffing. Google addresses the first 3 directly in its generative AI optimization guide.
- llms.txt: Google states the file neither harms nor helps visibility in its search features.
- Chunking: Google states there is "no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces" and no ideal page length.
- AI specific schema: Google's AI features page states no special structured data is required. Schema still helps rich results in classic SEO.
- Keyword stuffing: the GEO paper measured it at 10% worse than no edit on Perplexity.
What holds up in the evidence: accurate facts, cited sources, clear structure and real third party coverage.
How do you measure SEO, AEO and GEO results?
Measure SEO with rankings and clicks, AEO with answer features won, and GEO with citation counts and mention rates across repeated prompts. 5 data sources exist, 4 live and 1 announced:
| Data source | What it shows | Discipline |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Performance report | Clicks and impressions, with AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic counted in the Web search type | SEO, AEO, GEO |
| Search Generative AI performance reports | Announced in a June 2026 Search Central post; we have not reviewed its metrics yet | GEO |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Total Citations, Average Cited Pages and grounding queries across Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries (public preview since February 10, 2026) | GEO |
| Analytics referrals | ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends, per OpenAI | GEO |
| Prompt tracking tools | Share of answers that name your brand across a fixed prompt set | AEO, GEO |
For the prompt panel, pick 20 to 50 buyer prompts, run each one 3 times a month, and report the percentage of answers that name you. That cadence is our own method. It applies SparkToro's conclusion that a visibility percentage across repeated runs is a fair metric. To connect visibility to revenue, tag chatgpt.com and other AI referrals as their own channel in analytics and track their conversions. Our AI visibility tools comparison lists 12 trackers with checked prices.
How do you split budget between SEO and GEO?
Split budget by your weakest scoreboard: fix SEO first if you rank poorly, and shift toward mentions once you rank but AI answers skip you. This decision table is our own method, priced with our published rates.
| Your situation | Put most budget into | Example order and price |
|---|---|---|
| New site, weak rankings, few links | SEO links and content | Growth link building package, $1,020 |
| Ranks on page 1, absent from AI answers | Brand mentions on list and review pages | 3 brand mentions in listicles at $286 each, $858 |
| Buyers ask on Reddit and Quora | Community discussion | Community mentions, 10 threads for $510 |
| Has data or a story worth covering | Editorial press coverage | digital PR campaign, 5 links for $3,570 |
| Wants links and mentions in one order | Both | Growth AI package, $1,530 |
Sample split (our numbers, not a client result): take a software site on page 1 with $1,800 a month. It could buy 3 brand listicles ($858), 1 community mention campaign ($510) and 2 DR 40+ guest posts ($368). That totals $1,736, or $1,562.40 with our 10% subscription saving. No vendor, including us, can guarantee an AI citation. We guarantee the DR and traffic of each placement, which is the part we control.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO depends on SEO, because Google's AI features, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT search draw on web search indexes. Google classifies AI search work as SEO. OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page states it may share queries with search providers such as Bing. Bing placed its AI Performance report inside Webmaster Tools and called it "an early step toward Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) tooling".
The practical answer is one program with two scoreboards. Keep the SEO work that gets pages indexed and ranked, then add the GEO work that gets your brand named on the pages AI engines cite. A link building agency that also sells brand mentions can run both in one order.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO improves pages so they rank in Google and Bing results and earn clicks. GEO improves how often AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name or cite your brand in their written answers. Both rely on an indexed, trusted site. GEO adds sourced facts, quotable passages and mentions on the third party pages those engines cite.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
AEO and GEO share their core tactics today. AEO targets featured snippets, voice replies and other single answers. GEO comes from a 2023 research paper about answers written by large language models. Both reward direct answers, clear entities and evidence. We run them as one workstream with shared reporting.
Can GEO hurt traditional SEO performance?
Evidence based GEO edits (direct answers, cited sources, clear structure) also suit classic SEO, so they carry little risk. The risk comes from tactics sold under the GEO label: keyword stuffing, pages split into thin fragments and fake mentions. The GEO paper measured keyword stuffing as a loss, and Google calls popular AI search hacks ineffective.
Do I need both SEO and GEO for my website?
Websites that sell to people who use AI assistants benefit from both, with SEO first. Google's AI features, Copilot and ChatGPT search draw on web search indexes, so a page that is not indexed is rarely cited. Add GEO once your key pages rank, then check whether AI answers for your buyer prompts name you. Mentions on the pages those answers cite close the gap when competitors appear instead.
Does link building help with GEO?
Link building helps GEO indirectly. Links help pages get crawled, indexed and ranked, and AI engines cite from those pages. The direct GEO signal is different: Ahrefs described the correlation between link metrics, such as backlink counts, and AI brand mentions as very weak across 75,000 brands. Combine links that build rankings with brand mentions on the pages AI answers already cite.
What KPIs matter for GEO vs SEO?
SEO KPIs are rankings, organic clicks, impressions and conversions from Google Search Console and analytics. GEO KPIs are the share of tracked prompts that name your brand, citation counts in Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance, and referral visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com. Report GEO as a percentage across repeated runs, because single answers change from run to run.
